A short summer session may be available depending on interest and instructor avaiability.

The Basics

This course is oriented towards the repair of an American 8-day, spring or weight driven movement typically found in a mantle or wall clock, with or without a striking mechanism.

Please note that Westminster or other triple chime movements, floating balance or hairspring movements, cuckoo clocks, and Anniversary or 400-day clocks are beyond the scope of this entry-level course.

Hands-on Approach

Under the guidance of experienced instructors, students will work at their own pace on their own clocks.

Students should furnish their own basic tools such as screwdrivers (both straight-slot and Phillips head), side cutters, small hammers (brass, steel, rawhide, and assorted pliers. Other tools and equipment are available for use while in the classroom.

Syllabus

This comprehensive course will transform you from a mere observer of time into a knowledgeable clock caretaker. Through interactive sessions and while learning at your own pace, you’ll gain an understanding of clock functions, escapements, while learning the art of disassembly, cleaning, oiling, reassembly, part replacement, and time regulation, focusing on a typical American 8-day spring/weight driven mantle or wall clocks. Students must be prepared to bring your own clock.
